If you are thinking about coating your interior floor with the softness of carpet, you might not know exactly where to start or what type of carpet is best suited to your home and life style. Carpet choices do impact and change the interior design of your home. There are many things to take into consideration; the most important word to remember when making a carpet choice is traffic. You don’t want to put plush carpet by the sliding glass door that leads to the backyard, any more than you want to put taut, brittle fibers in the master bedroom.
Often in life it is said, “You get what you pay for.” That is never truer than it is in the rug world. So think about your family, your pets, your children and the time that you believe you will be living in your home when you are deciding on what type of investment to make in your carpet.
When it comes to the quality of carpet there are 3 main categories.
- The Density
- The Twist
- The Pile Height
An immediate observation when pricing carpet is that the denser and higher a carpet is the more material and time was taken to produce it and the cost follows accordingly. There are many different types of material and blends of materials that are used to make carpets. The elements of these materials change features and qualities of the carpet and change the way they feel on our feet.
Nylon is the most common material and has excellent durability and wear characteristics. Polypropylene is commonly used to make Berber carpet, which can have small loops or larger loops. The smaller looped carpet is often used in commercial grade carpets, is well constructed and works well in heavy traffic areas. Wool and wool-blends are very durable and broadly used in modern carpet production, but it is moderately expensive. Polyester has good stain-resistant qualities and in pricing it is usually in the mid to low range, one of its disadvantages is that it tends to compress down easily.
Carpet brings elements of warmth and comfort to our homes and rooms that tile cannot produce. When deciding on your carpet, do your research and remember to take into consideration the material of the product and also the traffic of your life-style and different patterns of your home life.
