Q. What’s the difference between ceramic tile and porcelain tile?
A. Ceramic tile is made from red or white clay that is fired in a kiln, and it’s softer and easier to cut than porcelain. It is also more likely to chip or crack, which is why it works best in areas with light or moderate foot traffic. Porcelain tile is created using special porcelain clays and is fired at a much higher temperature than ceramic. As a result, porcelain is very dense and has an increased resistance to moisture, stains, and everyday wear and tear. It is more durable than most other tile products and holds up in extreme temperatures. Porcelain works well almost anywhere (inside or outside of your home) and holds up great in high-traffic areas.
Q. What is glazed ceramic tile?
A. The body of the ceramic tile, which is called the bisque, is coated with a liquid made up of glass-forming minerals and baked at a high temperature producing a glaze. This glaze is what determines the tile’s design and color and makes it more resistant to stains and moisture. Matte, semi-gloss, and high-gloss finish options are available, but these finishes have very different attributes. High-gloss finishes show scratches, are more slippery, and have a higher-end classy look. These work well in formal areas like dining rooms or a fancy foyer. Matte or textured finishes offer more traction and do a better job of hiding dirt and scratches. These finishes are commonly found in kitchens and casual living areas.
Q. What is unglazed ceramic tile?
A. Unglazed ceramic tiles are just composed of the bisque, so the tile color is identical to the natural color of the clay. They commonly come in earth tones like terra cotta and Saltillo tiles. Unglazed tiles are relatively durable and do not show staining like their glazed counterparts. They are also much more slip-resistant, which makes them great for areas like kitchens and laundry rooms. Unfortunately, the downside of unglazed tiles is their vulnerability to staining. For this reason, it is important to apply a sealant and a wax to protect the tile after installation.
